Conjunctival Disorders

Viral (MC) vs Bacterial vs Allergic Conjunctivitis

  • Viral (usually bilateral) 
  • Bacterial (usually unilateral with mucupurulent discharge)
  • Allergic (Itching, redness, clear discharge bilaterally, + other atopy symptoms)
(Contact lens wearers need Pseudomonas coverage)

If asked a question about a baby with eye discharge ALWAYS think:

***Does this baby have an STD in its eye?***

Corneal Disorders

Cataracts

Opacification of the lens of the eye

Causes: age, smoking, steroid use

Tx: Surgery

Corneal Ulcer

Obvious corneal defect on Slit lamp exam

Tx: Antibiotic Eye Drops

***Dendritic Lesions = Herpes***

Pterygium

Triangular shaped growth in eye

(Look for the construction worker or surfer with this presentation)

Tx: Supportive unless vision is impaired

Lid Disorders

Blepharitis

Eye lid inflammation

**Eye lid flaking or crusting**

Tx: Warm compresses, baby shampoo, topical ABX

Chalazion

PainLESS nodule formed on the eyelid

Tx: Warm compresses

Hordeolum (Stye)

Hordeolum = Hurt

PainFUL nodule formed on the eyelid

Tx: Warm compresses, I&D if refractory

Ectropion

Ectropion = External turning of the eyelid

Entropion

Entropion = Enternal (Internal) turning of the eyelid (can lead to corneal abrasions)

Neuro-ophthalmologic disorders

Optic Neuritis

Inflammation of optic nerve

Loss of vision, with PAIN WITH EYE MOVEMENT

Inflammatory disease so treatment is steroids

Papilledema

Edema = swelling

Swelling of the optic nerve due to increased intracranial pressure

Identify cause to guide treatment
