Brush some teeth and save a life!

Daily toothbrushing is associated with a 33% lower risk of hospital-acquired pneumonia (HAP) and a 29% lower risk of intensive care unit (ICU) mortality, especially in patients on mechanical ventilation, according to a meta-analysis conducted by researchers at Harvard University. The study, comprising 15 randomized clinical trials with 2786 patients, highlights the potential benefits of routine oral hygiene in hospital settings. Toothbrushing not only demonstrated a positive impact on HAP incidence but also correlated with shorter ICU admissions and reduced ventilator dependency.

The findings underscore the importance of reassessing hospital policies to prioritize oral hygiene, particularly in situations where attention may be focused elsewhere. The study suggests that daily toothbrushing could be a simple yet effective measure in preventing hospital-acquired infections, with potential implications for infection control practices in healthcare settings.

Someone now has a chip in their brain….literally!

Ladies and gentlemen, it happened. Someone officially has a chip in their brain.

Elon Musk, founder of Neuralink, announced that the first human has received an implant from the brain-chip startup and is recovering well. The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) granted clearance in September for Neuralink to conduct the first human trial of its brain-chip implant. Musk mentioned promising results in detecting neuron spikes, indicating brain activity. The first product, called Telepathy, aims to enable control of devices through thought, initially benefiting those who have lost limb function. While Musk has a history of ambitious promises, this development is seen as a significant milestone in the brain-computer interface field.

The study, named Prime, is evaluating the safety and functionality of Neuralink’s wireless brain-computer interface, allowing individuals with quadriplegia to control devices using their thoughts. Musk emphasized the potential for participants to communicate faster than a typist, illustrating the goal of the technology. Critics note the need for long-term evaluation of the interface’s stability and benefits.

Soon enough, you won’t need to take the time to memorize all the psychiatric drugs and their side effects, you will just be able to download it to your brain. Crazy stuff!

Become laser-focused with this study technique

First I want to tell you all about a chrome extension that I WISH I knew about in school

It’s called StayFocusd

StayFocusd is designed to boost productivity by helping users limit the time spent on distracting websites. Once installed, users can set specific time limits for accessing websites known for consuming time without significant work output, such as social media platforms or entertainment sites. When the allotted time is used up, StayFocusd restricts access to these designated websites for the rest of the day. This encourages users to “stay focused” on their work, reduce procrastination, and manage their online activities more efficiently. It serves as a self-discipline tool to enhance productivity and prevent excessive time-wasting on the internet.

Now let me tell you about a well-known learning method that was named after the Nobel prize-winning physicist, Richard Feynman.

The Feynman technique.

It involves four simple steps:

  1. Choose a Concept and Study: Select a topic or concept you want to understand or learn more about and study it.
  2. Teach it to a Child: Pretend you are teaching the chosen concept to a child who has no prior knowledge of the subject. Use simple language and break down complex ideas into easy-to-understand terms.
  3. Identify Gaps in Your Understanding: As you explain the concept, take note of any areas where you struggle or find it challenging to articulate clearly. These areas highlight gaps in your understanding.
  4. Review and Simplify: Go back to your study materials, review the parts where you had difficulties, and simplify the information until you can explain it in plain and clear terms. Repeat this process until you can convey the concept effortlessly.

Essentially:

  1. Learn
  2. Do
  3. Teach

Sound familiar?

If you haven’t heard this expression yet, you will hear it a lot on clinical rotations when it’s time to do any procedure!

Try the Feynman technique with your study group next time you’re learning any topic.

That’s all for today.
