Cardiomyopathy

Jorge Muniz, creator of Medcomic, is an artist and absolute genius. Using his representations of different pathologies definitely helped me better grasp subjects in PA school.

Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy

Diastolic Dysfunction. MC initial complaint is SOB. (Look for this in the young athlete who suddenly collapses.)

Dilated Cardiomyopathy

MC type of cardiomyopathy (95%). Tx: Standard HF tx

Restricted Cardiomyopathy

Right-Sided Heart Failure symptoms. (Look for the patient with autoimmune disease OR the cancer patient who recently had chemotherapy or radiation therapy who is experiencing right HF symptoms!!)

DON’T FORGET ABOUT TAKOTSUBO CARDIOMYOPATHY

(aka Broken Heart Syndrome)

Stressful event leading to a catecholomine surge that results in ballooning of the left ventricle. It can mimic an MI with ST elevations and + Troponin.
