How to Apply for your NPI number

Author: Matt Delph, PA-C

This post is directed toward all the students who are at the end of their PA school career and are starting to job hunt and apply for positions!

What is a National Provider Identifier (NPI) number?

“A National Provider Identifier (NPI) is a unique identification number for covered health care providers, created to improve efficiency and effectiveness of electronic transmission of health information. It does not carry information about you, such as state where you practice, your provider type, or your specialization” (Center for Medicare and Medicaid Services, 2018).

This number is essentially THE FIRST number you need to apply for out of school once you land a job because it labels you as a provider.  Also, when you start filling out paperwork for your new place of work, you will likely be asked for this information. Because you are probably studying and reviewing non-stop for your boards, it can be stressful to gather all the information you need in order to start working.

That’s where I come in.

Below is a link that easily outlines how to apply for your National Provider Identifier (NPI) STEP-BY-STEP. This way their is no stress involved and you can go back to studying about all the different diabetes medications and their mechanism of action! ☺
