Apthous Ulcers
Benign, non-contagious
Also known as CANKER SORE
White circular lesion in the oral cavity with surrounding erythema
Avoid ETOH and caffeine
Tx: Self resolving but can give symptomatic treatment (ex. Magic Mouthwash)
Candidiasis
Seen in immunocompromised patients or inhaler uses
Dx: White plaques that CAN be scraped off leaving raw red surface
Prevention: Wash mouth out after inhaler use for asthmatics
Laryngitis
Trauma vs Infection (Viral)
Hoarseness
Tx: Symptomatic
RED FLAGS:
- +cough
- +hemoptysis
- > 3 weeks
Herpes Simplex
Gingivostomatitis vs Pharyngotonsilitis
Tx: Self limiting
Pharyngitis
***Sore Throat + L.E.A.F. **
Lymphandenopathy
Exudates (on tonsils)
Absence of cough
Fever
Complications include: Scarlet fever, Rheumatic Fever, Glomerulonephritis
Salivary Disorders
Sialadenitis
BACTERIAL INFECTION of salivary glands
MCC = Staph Aureus
Tender gland, swollen, +drainage when massaged
Tx: Antibiotics and lozenges
Parotitis
Inflammation of parotid glands (usually bilateral involvement)
Viral MCC (Mumps usually on differential)
Tx: Symptomatic
